The Creative Company

The Creative Company

The Creative Company Website

The history of The Creative Company begins in 1932, alongside the Minnesota River. Founded in Mankato, Minnesota, and a visionary named George Peterson. The company was named The Creative Educational Society, and started humbly enough. As a fledgling company, it produced maps and diagrams for teachers and students, offered chalk game sets called Pla-Boards, and issued a set of rubber stamps called the Creative Pictured Printer.

From there, the company branched into textbooks and was soon publishing on topics that ranged from science to sports. In the 1960s, George Peterson Jr. joined his father, and the newly named Creative Education, Inc., began a transformation that made it a leading children’s publisher. The company broadened its offerings and reputation, creating magnificently illustrated school and library books and publishing them in dozens of languages.

Today, with almost 3,500 books to their credit, The Creative Company is led by third-generation owner and publisher Tom Peterson, and has expanded to include three distinct imprints. Creative Education connects the company to its nonfiction roots with the annual publication of more than 110 titles for schools and libraries. Creative Editions, founded in 1992, publishes picture books globally hailed for their innovation. And Creative Paperbacks, encompassing both fiction and nonfiction, has been creating high-quality paperbacks since 2000.

Much has changed about the company since 1932. But much remains the same. They are still in Mankato next to the Minnesota River. The images of the original rubber stamps still adorn their envelopes. They still publish books recognized the world over for their beauty and enduring educational value. The Creative Company remains as dedicated as founder, George Peterson Sr., to producing materials that both teach and inspire.

Sourcebooks

Sourcebooks

Sourcebooks Website

Founded In 1987, a determined Dominique Raccah left a promising career with advertising giant Leo Burnett, cashed in $17,000 from her 401K plan and launched a publishing house from her upstairs bedroom in Naperville, Illinois. She called it Sourcebooks.

Over the years, Sourcebooks has grown and flourished by following its independent vision, and by publishing extraordinary authors and unique books with readers in mind. Noted for its strong publicity and marketing efforts on behalf of its authors and retailers, Sourcebooks stands today as one of the leading independent book publishers in North America.

Founded with one title, Financial Sourcebooks Sources, Sourcebooks initially focused on publishing professional finance titles and books for bankers. In the early 1990s, Sourcebooks had its initial success in bookstores with business titles like The Small Business Survival Guide and The Complete Book of Business Plans, titles that continue to thrive for the company today.

Sourcebooks also began expanding outside business and finance with a highly successful gift book for women entitled Finding Time. In 1993, Sourcebooks partnered with retailer Sally Beauty Supply to develop and publish 500 Beauty Solutions, later expanded to 1001 Beauty Solutions. These books led to Sourcebooks’ first six-figure print run, and furthered its reach into other general trade books and nonbookstore markets. From the early 1990s to today, self-help, parenting, business and reference paperbacks have always formed a backbone of the Sourcebooks list.

In 1997, just ten years after its conception, Sourcebooks was listed by trade magazine Publishers Weekly as the sixth-fastest-growing small publisher in the country; it would move up to No. 3 the next year. Its 1999 appearance at No. 2 was Sourcebooks’ final time on the list—the company is now too large to be eligible. Sourcebooks’ sales figures also reflected its success by doubling every two years during this era.

Sourcebooks’ growth has also been due in part to frequent acquisitions of imprints that continue to thrive today. In 1996, Sourcebooks added Casablanca Press with its love- and romance-oriented self-help books, including the legendary bestseller 1001 Ways To Be Romantic by Gregory Godek. Now dubbed Sourcebooks Casablanca, the imprint has grown to encompass relationship, sex and wedding titles and in 2007 began publishing romance fiction.

Sphinx Publishing, a Florida-based publisher of self-help law books, joined Sourcebooks in 1997. Since then, Sphinx has grown many times over, firmly establishing itself among the top sources of consumer legal information in the country. Its line of national and state-specific titles help take the mystery out of the law for everyday people, and the imprint has expanded into new arenas, including Spanish-language titles, real estate and citizens' rights.

In 1998, Sourcebooks purchased Hysteria Publications, a Connecticut-based publisher of humor and women’s interest books. Today called Sourcebooks Hysteria, it makes up our humor imprint.

Sourcebooks’ growth accelerated rapidly from there. In the summer of 1998, the publisher was the talk of BookExpo America with We Interrupt This Broadcast by Joe Garner. The book, featuring two compact discs with integrated content, was the introduction of a new genre for the publishing industry and the birth of a new chapter for Sourcebooks. It was also by far Sourcebooks' largest first printing with 150,000 copies, and it went on to become Sourcebooks’ first New York Times bestseller. The brilliant pairing of live audio with photographs and the written word resonated enormous interest within the bookselling community and generated more than 700,000 copies sold to date.

In 1999, the sports-themed And The Crowd Goes Wild landed in stores by the pallet for the holiday season. Featuring compact discs narrated by broadcast sports journalist Bob Costas, the book was an immediate sensation, spending nine weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. In Publishers Weekly’s ranking of the bestsellers of 1999, the trade publication identified Sourcebooks with five books from three different authors. This put Sourcebooks on the same level of publishers and imprints twice its size and six times its age, such as Knopf, Morrow, Norton and Houghton Mifflin.

The new century dawned brightly as Sourcebooks celebrated January 2000 with two titles on the first New York Times hardcover nonfiction bestseller list of the twenty-first century. Shortly thereafter, it became the only book publisher named to that year's prestigious Inc. 500, the annual ranking of America’s fastest-growing companies.

Later in the year 2000, Sourcebooks formalized the launch of its Sourcebooks MediaFusion imprint, today the nation's leading publisher of books with integrated mixed-media. And The Crowd Goes Wild merited a follow-up, And The Fans Roared, which became a holiday favorite, hitting the New York Times list in January 2001.

In 2001, Sourcebooks MediaFusion reinvigorated the way Americans experience poetry with Poetry Speaks, a book and three-CD combination featuring noted poets from Tennyson to Plath reading their own work. This remarkable anthology, a Los Angeles Times bestseller and a New York Times extended list bestseller, was lauded by Publishers Weekly as having "the potential to draw more readers to poetry than any collection in years."

2001 also featured the launch of its fiction imprint, Sourcebooks Landmark, so named to reflect the quality, value and longevity of its books. Tony Parsons’ Man and Boy, the 2000 British Book of the Year, and bookseller favorite Michael Malone led the way. Malone returned to writing fiction after a ten-year absence with the Book Sense 76 selection and New York Times extended list bestseller First Lady, as well as reissues of all his backlist, including Handling Sin, Foolscap, Time’s Witness and Uncivil Seasons.

Sourcebooks again claimed space on bestseller lists in spring 2003, placing Charles Cerami's engrossing history Jefferson's Great Gamble on the New York Times nonfiction hardcover extended list. At the same time, chef Cary Neff's bold, unique and flavorful style of cooking made Conscious Cuisine a favorite. Boosted by an appearance on Oprah, Conscious Cuisine made Neff a New York Times bestselling author in his inaugural effort.

In 2004 and 2005, Sourcebooks began developing its first calendar list, dedicated to publishing unique and contentful wall and box calendars. Its successful calendar line now grows each year on the backs of hits like Getting in Touch with Your Inner Bitch, The History Channel On This Day and The Weather Channel.

Later in 2005, the renowned Poetry Speaks finally got its follow-up book, but not the sort you’d expect. The publisher took an audacious detour and released its first children’s picture book, Poetry Speaks to Children. The unique grouping of poems, illustrations and a CD of poets (mostly) reading their own work delighted booksellers and found its way into the hearts of children and parents alike. It also found its way to the New York Times bestsellers list for ten weeks, the longest of any Sourcebooks title at the time. The title eventually marked the springboard for the launch of Sourcebooks Jabberwocky, a children’s imprint started in 2007. Though a fresh face in the children’s section, Sourcebooks Jabberwocky quickly published several bestsellers, including the picture book I Love You More, by Laura Duksta, illustrated by Karen Keesler, and the revolutionary book-plus-CD Hip Hop Speaks to Children, edited by Nikki Giovanni.

2007 and 2008 also featured the extension of our Sourcebooks Casablanca imprint into the wonderful realm of romance fiction. In a wide variety of romance genres and in multiple formats, our Casablanca authors continue to enthrall and titillate.

But the Sourcebooks story is not one just of bestsellers lists and major accomplishments. It’s the story of its roster of hundreds of talented writers (and a growing number of hard-working, book-loving employees). Most books don’t make the Times’ bestsellers list, but Sourcebooks’ titles will have an impact and they will find their way into people’s homes.

If they had a Times list for college guides, Sourcebooks would be there, right at the top (Fiske Guide to Colleges and the U.S.News & World Report Ultimate College Guide). The same goes for college life books (The Naked Roommate, by Harlan Cohen). And Jane Austen sequels (Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife and Darcy and Elizabeth, by Linda Berdoll). And baby names (The Complete Book of Baby Names, by Lesley Bolton). And wedding books (Do You Know Your Bride/Groom, by Dan Carlinsky). And Valentine’s Day gift books (Great Sex Coupons). And grieving/recovery books (I Wasn’t Ready to Say Goodbye, by Brook Noel). And martini books (The Ultimate Little Martini Book, by Ray Foley). And wall calendars (George W. Bush Out of Office Countdown; Barack Obama: Words of Hope and Inspiration). And the list goes on.

Today, Sourcebooks continues to publish titles in nearly every shape, size and format. The eclectic and exciting breadth of its list—nonfiction in most categories, commercial and literary fiction, romance novels, gift books, calendars, children’s books and more—is unmatched anywhere. Its future is guided by its continuing commitment to reaching readers with books that will illuminate, inspire and enlighten their lives.

Drawn & Quarterly

With cartoonists that have been instrumental in defining the literary comics medium for the past twenty years and a willingness to experiment with formats and concepts, Drawn & Quarterly has become one of the most influential art and literary comics publishers in North America, if not the whole world.

Back in 1989, Chris Oliveros humbly went in search of artists to contribute to his yet-to-be-published magazine anthology named Drawn & Quarterly. Armed with a honed aesthetic, he advertised in different venues and approached promising artists. As a result, Oliveros assembled the most esteemed and distinct coterie of cartoonists since the days of Art Spiegelman's RAW.

Oliveros's visual acumen and astute production values coupled with the complete editorial and creative freedom offered to the cartoonists enabled D+Q to make an immediate mark in the world of comics. After several anthologies, comic book series and graphic novels, D+Q has established an elite and varied roster of cartoonists that includes Adrian Tomine, Seth, Chester Brown, Joe Matt, Julie Doucet, and James Sturm, who are considered to be some of the medium's best and are synonymous with Drawn & Quarterly.

Big Questions, Or Else, Optic Nerve, Berlin and Atlas have joined Peepshow and Palooka-Ville as D+Q's current ongoing comic book series. Exquisitely designed sketchbooks by iconic luminaries R. Crumb and Chris Ware joined sketchbooks by Julie Doucet and Seth. Graphic novels include war comics-journalism from Joe Sacco, travelogues by Guy Delisle, a charming teenage memoir by Michel Rabagliatti and translations of European masters Igort, Baru, and Dupuy & Berberian. The original magazine anthology became a lavish, oversized, coffee table annual. D+Q has also engaged in ambitious reprint projects, including the work of Frank King, Tove Jansson (Moomin), and Yoshihiro Tatsumi.

Book lovers, who appreciate exceptional quality in literature and design, laud D+Q for creating elegant objects that transcend the boundaries of books and comics. The New York Times Book Review, The Globe & Mail, The Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, Print Magazine, Entertainment Weekly and Time have all sung the praises of D+Q.

By adhering to Oliveros's focused editorial direction, D+Q has grown from being a periodical company to a book publisher with over 20 titles a year and an extraordinary backlist of perennial best-selling titles that are regarded as literary classics. Growing more ambitious every year, the publisher takes on new comic books, art books, and graphic novels by renowned cartoonists and newcomers from around the globe.

In the nearly twenty-eight years since its founding, Princeton Architectural Press has become a world leader in architecture and design publishing, both in market share and in editorial and design excellence. With over 600 titles on their backlist, they have consistently sought the best in their field, and have been able to attract and publish it. They've made their reputation in part by identifying new trends and publishing first books on emerging talents, as well as definitive works on established names, and by creating books of unsurpassed design quality and production values.

They have also successfully broadened the scope of what design publishing constitutes, by publishing everything from theory anthologies to documentation of remote Canadian fishing villages. Crossing boundaries is their strongest suit: they excel at publishing books that defy easy categorization. And in an industry where the average life span of a book is measured in months, if not weeks, Princeton Architectural Press are a committed backlist publisher; indeed, the first book they published, Letarouilly's Edifices de Rome Moderne, is still in print.

Both the Press and their books have won numerous awards, for editorial excellence and for book design. They've been described in professional and popular media as "visually inviting," "elegant and charming," "useful as well as beautiful," "lovingly produced," "authoritative," "thorough and comprehensive," and so on: Princeton Architectural Press try to make books that are smart and beautiful.

The Legendary Notebook

moleskine notebooks canada creating

Moleskine® is the heir and successor to the legendary notebook used by artists and thinkers over the past two centuries: among them Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, and Bruce Chatwin. A simple black rectangle with rounded corners, an elastic page-holder, and an internal expandable pocket: a nameless object with a spare perfection all its own, produced for over a century by a small French bookbinder that supplied the stationery shops of Paris, where the artistic and literary avant-gardes of the world browsed and bought them. A trusted and handy travel companion, the notebook held invaluable sketches, notes, stories, and ideas that would one day become famous paintings or the pages of beloved books.

Chatwin's Story

moleskine notebooks canada writing

The notebook was Bruce Chatwin's favorite, and it was he who called it "moleskine." In the mid-1980s, these notebooks became increasingly scarce, and then vanished entirely. In his book The Songlines Chatwin tells the story of the little black notebook: in 1986, the manufacturer, a small family-owned company in the French city of Tours, went out of business. "Le vrai moleskine n'est plus," are the lapidary words he puts into the mouth of the owner of the stationery shop in the Rue de l'Ancienne Comédie, where he usually purchased his notebooks. Chatwin set about buying up all the notebooks that he could find before his departure for Australia, but there were still not enough.

The Moleskine® Notebook

moleskine notebooks canada exploring

In 1997, a small Milanese publisher brought the legendary notebook back to life, and selected this name with a literary pedigree to revive an extraordinary tradition. Following in Chatwin's footsteps, Moleskine® notebooks have resumed their travels, providing an indispensable complement to the new and portable technology of today. Capturing reality in movement, glimpsing and recording details, inscribing the unique nature of experience on paper: Moleskine notebook is a battery that stores ideas and feelings, releasing its energy over time. Today, Moleskine is synonymous with culture, travel, memory, imagination, and personal identity — in both the real world and the virtual world. It is a brand that identifies a family of notebooks,
journals, diaries, and innovative city guides, adapted to various functions. With the diverse array of page formats, Moleskine notebooks are partners for the creative and imaginative professions of our time. They represent, around the world, a symbol of contemporary nomadism, in close connection with the digital world, through a network of websites, blogs, online groups, and virtual archives. With Moleskine, the age-old gesture of taking notes and doing sketches — typically analogue activities — have found an unexpected forum on the web and in its communities.

"Inspired by the enduring magic and importance of books, our objective is to create and distribute exceptional publishing that's instantly recognizable for its spirit, creativity, and value. This objective also informs our business relationships and endeavors, be they with customers, authors, vendors, or colleagues."

Company History

One of the most admired and respected publishing companies in the U.S., Chronicle Books was founded in 1967 and over the years has developed a reputation for award-winning, innovative books. The company continues to challenge conventional publishing wisdom, setting trends in both subject and format, maintaining a list that includes fine art titles in design, art, architecture, and photography.

Titles of note include Martha Zamora's Frida Kahlo: The Brush of Anguish (1990), and Nick Bantock's Griffin & Sabine (1991). Originally slated for an edition of 10,000, this interactive book became the most talked-about title of the year and a New York Times best-seller for 50 weeks. The two subsequent volumes in the trilogy, Sabine's Notebook and The Golden Mean, were also Times best-sellers.

The company brought the same innovative philosophy to cookbooks with its four-color release of Sushi (1981) which sold 90,000 copies and is still in print. Chronicle Books also publishes James McNair's eye-catching cookbooks, all perennial best-sellers having sold over one million copies.

The Children's list was launched in 1988 and has published the best-selling Mama, Do You Love Me? (over one million copies in hardcover), Ten Little Rabbits (450,000 copies) and N.C. Wyeth's Pilgrims (100,000 copies). The list has grown to include not only traditional picture books but affordable paperbacks, board books, plush toys, and novelty merchandise.

In 1992, Chronicle Books launched its Gift division to develop ancillary products such as the Griffin & Sabine address book and writing box, the best-selling 52 Deck series, and a motorcycle journal and address book based on the Harley-Davidson image archives.
