Our books are written by speakers from the Do Lectures whose ideas have inspired others to go and Do. Our aim is to recreate that same positive change in book form – whether that’s the mastery of a new skill or craft, a simple mindshift, or a shot of inspiration to help you get started.

Each book is fairly short, about 100 pages, as it focuses on the ‘doing’ rather than the background theory. Concise, practical guides that make it easier to Do stuff.

We hope you like them and find them useful.

As a fledgling company, it produced maps and diagrams for teachers and students, offered chalk game sets called Pla-Boards, and issued a set of rubber stamps called the Creative Pictured Printer.

From there, the company branched into textbooks and was soon publishing on topics that ranged from science to sports. In the 1960s, George Peterson Jr. joined his father, and the newly named Creative Education, Inc., began a transformation that made it a leading children’s publisher. The company broadened its offerings and reputation, creating magnificently illustrated school and library books and publishing them in dozens of languages.

Today, with almost 3,500 books to their credit, The Creative Company is led by third-generation owner and publisher Tom Peterson, and has expanded to include three distinct imprints. Creative Education connects the company to its nonfiction roots with the annual publication of more than 110 titles for schools and libraries. Creative Editions, founded in 1992, publishes picture books globally hailed for their innovation. And Creative Paperbacks, encompassing both fiction and nonfiction, has been creating high-quality paperbacks since 2000.

Much has changed about the company since 1932. But much remains the same. They are still in Mankato next to the Minnesota River. The images of the original rubber stamps still adorn their envelopes. They still publish books recognized the world over for their beauty and enduring educational value. The Creative Company remains as dedicated as founder, George Peterson Sr., to producing materials that both teach and inspire.

The Sourcebooks Story

Founded with just one professional finance title, Sourcebooks was started in 1987 by Dominique Raccah. Over the years, Sourcebooks has grown and flourished by following its independent vision and by publishing extraordinary authors and unique books with readers in mind. Noted for its strong publicity and marketing efforts on behalf of its authors and retailer partners, Sourcebooks stands today as one of the leading and largest independent publishers in North America.

In 1996, Sourcebooks added Casablanca Press with its love- and romance-oriented self-help books. The Casablanca imprint has grown to encompass relationship, sex and wedding titles and in 2007 began publishing romance fiction. Sphinx Publishing, a publisher of consumer-oriented self-help law books, joined Sourcebooks in 1997, and in 1998 Sourcebooks purchased Hysteria Publications, a Connecticut-based publisher of humor and women’s interest books.

In the year 2000, Sourcebooks launched its MediaFusion imprint, today the nation's leading publisher of integrated mixed-media projects. 2001 featured the launch of fiction imprint, Sourcebooks Landmark, so named to reflect the quality, value and longevity of its books. In 2004 and 2005, Sourcebooks began developing its first calendar list, dedicated to publishing unique and content-full wall and box calendars.

The children’s imprint, Sourcebooks Jabberwocky, started in 2007; 2010 ushered in an imprint for young adult audiences: Sourcebooks Fire, committed to bringing exciting voices to the next generation of readers.

Today, Sourcebooks continues to publish authors in countless subjects and styles, and in formats both classically physical and dynamically digital. The eclectic and exciting breadth of its list—nonfiction in most categories, commercial and historical fiction, romance novels, gift books, college-bound materials, calendars, children’s books and more—is unmatched anywhere. Its future is guided by its continuing commitment to reaching readers with books that will illuminate, inspire and enlighten their lives.

Leading readers to the lessons and pleasures of the great outdoors.

The Mountaineers established Mountaineers Books in 1960 to express and share their love of nature and outdoor recreation.

Our very first book – Mountaineering: the Freedom of the Hills – remains a classic. It is heading into its 9th edition, and has been translated into more than 20 languages worldwide. Countless aspiring climbers have – literally – learned the ropes from us. From Freedom and teaching people how to climb, we branched out to guidebooks that showed people where to use their new skills. We started with the wild Cascade Mountains in our backyard and eventually reached the peaks of the Andes, climbing crags in Thailand, and many, many beautiful places in between.

Today, Mountaineers Books publishes great “how-to” and “where-to” books, and a wide range of award-winning adventure narratives, sustainable lifestyle guides, and conservation photography books. We are and have always been a non-profit organization and every one of our nearly 700 titles in print is designed to inspire a lifelong love for the great outdoors.

Skipstone, an imprint of the Mountaineers Books, produces books that are focused on the outdoor lifestyle.

Braided River books bring the work of some of the world’s best nature photographers together with thoughtful essays by well-known authors, conservationists and public figures.

"Inspired by the enduring magic and importance of books, our objective is to create and distribute exceptional publishing that's instantly recognizable for its spirit, creativity, and value. This objective also informs our business relationships and endeavors, be they with customers, authors, vendors, or colleagues."

Company History

One of the most admired and respected publishing companies in the U.S., Chronicle Books was founded in 1967 and over the years has developed a reputation for award-winning, innovative books. The company continues to challenge conventional publishing wisdom, setting trends in both subject and format, maintaining a list that includes fine art titles in design, art, architecture, and photography.

Titles of note include Martha Zamora's Frida Kahlo: The Brush of Anguish (1990), and Nick Bantock's Griffin & Sabine (1991). Originally slated for an edition of 10,000, this interactive book became the most talked-about title of the year and a New York Times best-seller for 50 weeks. The two subsequent volumes in the trilogy, Sabine's Notebook and The Golden Mean, were also Times best-sellers.

The company brought the same innovative philosophy to cookbooks with its four-color release of Sushi (1981) which sold 90,000 copies and is still in print. Chronicle Books also publishes James McNair's eye-catching cookbooks, all perennial best-sellers having sold over one million copies.

The Children's list was launched in 1988 and has published the best-selling Mama, Do You Love Me? (over one million copies in hardcover), Ten Little Rabbits (450,000 copies) and N.C. Wyeth's Pilgrims (100,000 copies). The list has grown to include not only traditional picture books but affordable paperbacks, board books, plush toys, and novelty merchandise.

In 1992, Chronicle Books launched its Gift division to develop ancillary products such as the Griffin & Sabine address book and writing box, the best-selling 52 Deck series, and a motorcycle journal and address book based on the Harley-Davidson image archives.
