Raincoast Books -- Podcast Edition 9 -- Clancy with the Puck by Chris Mizzoni
Clancy with the Puck by Chris Mizzoni
LISTEN NOW (MP3 Runs: 14:22)
He’s as skillful as Wayne Gretzky, as charismatic as Pierre Trudeau... and as arrogant as Don Cherry. A truly Canadian twist on the classic American baseball story “Casey at the Bat”, Clancy with the Puck is a hilarious tale of hockey hubris.
Clancy with the Puck was initially created as a cartoon by Chris Mizzoni, an animator at Studio B Productions. The picture book comes with a DVD featuring the animated short, narrated by the legendary Bob Cole, whose Hockey Night in Canada play-by-play is heard by millions of hockey fans every week.
In this interview with Robert Ouimet, Chris Mizzoni speaks about how the idea for Clancy was born, the process of turning an animation into a picture book, working with Bob Cole on the project and, of course, hockey. This podcast also includes snippets of Bob Cole’s narration featured on the animation.

Raincoast Books -- Podcast Edition 4 -- Picking Up the Pieces: Moving Forward After Surviving Cancer by Sherri Magee, PhD, and Kathy Scalzo, MSOD
Picking Up the Pieces: Moving Forward After Surviving Cancer by Sherri Magee, PhD, and Kathy Sclazo, MSOD.
LISTEN NOW (5.3 MB)
11 million people in North America are living with cancer today. Over a million new cases are diagnosed every year.
Of those new cases, 55-60% will survive.
Those survivors are looking at a last day of treatment and saying “Now what?”
William Bridges, author of The Way of Transition: Embracing Life’s Most Difficult Moments, best sums up the post-diagnosis of
cancer by saying “it isn’t surprising that cancer changes you. But few survivors are ready to let go of who they were, or to deal with the ambiguities of
the ‘nowhere’ they find themselves in.”
Bridges is referring to The Void described by Sherri Magee and Kathy Scalzo in Picking Up the Pieces: the lost land between patient and survivor. You’re not really sick anymore, but you don’t trust your health, either.
Picking Up the Pieces is a valuable aid for anyone who is dealing with the process that goes by the misleadingly simple name of “recovery.”

LISTEN NOW (15.0 MB)
“My characters reveal that Canadians can be just as despicable as our American counterparts; I want to provide a ‘warts and all’ perspective,
or as my grandfather said, ‘plenty of drugs, sex, strippers and violence.’ ” — Nathan Sellyn
Indigenous Beasts is a collection of short stories from this young new writer.
He’s an extraordinary storyteller, and these stories are raw and seething, intense with despair and depravity. They are bloody and beautiful and full of wisdom,

Indigenous Beasts: a collection of short stories by Nathan Sellyn.
LISTEN NOW (5.2 MB)
This podcast is an introduction to Nathan.
About the book:
Indigenous Beasts is a chilling collection of stories from Nathan Sellyn —
an extraordinary storyteller and a bold, young writer whose work is energetic, shocking and disturbing. These stories glimpse into the lives of young men who are intriguing,
seductive and sometimes despicable, and are lost in their efforts to make sense of their relationships, both with women — girlfriends, mothers, strippers — and men — fathers,
co-workers, dealers. These stories are raw and seething, intense with despair and depravity. They are bloody and beautiful and full of wisdom, and their pathetic heroes
struggle towards some unattainable and off-kilter moral standard.
