Mom Minute- Bring out your inner Van Gogh this summer with Doodle Books!

by Crystal
Art & Photography + Kids + Parenting / June 22, 2011

This week I bring you another Mom Minute. Summer is here. School is almost out. Your kids need some great activities to keep them busy at home, on vacation, or on long road trips.

My suggestion? Doodle books! Bring out their inner Van Gogh with these fun activity books. One part coloring book, one part sketch journal, they are fun for audiences of all ages. Yes, I myself have one in my studio at home that I pull out when I want to bring out my inner creative child.

Want to give them a whirl? As a special treat I have two free downloadable doodle pages for you.

The first is from Johnny Joe's Coloring Book.  Roz Streeten is the creator of the Rosie Flo Coloring books and now she brings us Johnny Joe who is a bit more appealing for a male audience.

Our second download is from PocketDoodles for Young Artists. These books are the perfect size to tuck in your back pocket or throw in a purse, bag or backpack to take on the go. Plus they come in a variety of themes. Your girly girls will love the PocketDoodles for Princesses, and look out for Monster Doodles for Kids coming this fall just in time for Halloween.

Want to download these doodle pages? Click on the photos to be brought to larger sized pdfs that you can print out!

Happy Doodling!

Crystal

Lots of Buzz (Lightyear, that is…)

by Siobhan
Art & Photography + Kids / May 26, 2010

Toy Story 3 hits theatres June 18th... Are you excited? I know I am.

While you countdown the days, you can get a taste of all the of the creativity, work, and love that went into the movie in The Art of Toy Story 3.

Check out this rave review of the book on the Upcoming Pixar blog:

The Art of Toy Story 3 is like no other coffee table book from Chronicle‘s celebrated collaboration with Pixar.

Although this publication takes a new path, itit’s nothing short of amazing. In fact, it superseded my already high expectations!

As a long time admirer of the studio’s artwork and behind-the-scenes stories, I couldn’t be happier. Much like its predecessors, this deluxe volume is packed with over 250 glossy, full color images. But we can also count on author Charles Solomon to satisfy our hunger for accompanying information.

Have You Met Noonie?

by Crystal
Art & Photography + Contests + Kids / March 23, 2010

Have you been introduced to Noonie yet? If not you are in for a great treat! Noonie is the main character of Chronicle Books new kids' fiction title Noonie's Masterpiece. A 10-year-old aspiring artist stuck living with an aunt, uncle, and cousin who clearly don't recognize her genius.

Here... get to know her!

Isn't she great? Don't you just love her?

One of my favourite things about Noonie's Masterpiece is that all of those amazing illustrations that you just saw in the trailer video are in the book! Yep that's right it is filled througout with gorgeous colour illustrations!

Want to be inspired by Noonie? Why not download a free Noonie Art Sheet?

Not only that but comment below with what artist inspires you and you could win a free copy of Noonie's Masterpiece along with a Purple Pigma Micron Pen just like the one that Sarajo Frieden used to illustrate the book! Contest closes April 23rd.

Is UP up for the challenge?

by Siobhan
Art & Photography + Film / March 05, 2010

They're rolling out the red carpet in Hollywood. The Oscars are on Sunday.

What I'm most interested in this year (besides seeing how Alec Baldwin fares as host) is the fact that Pixar's animated movie, UP, is not only nominated in the category of "Animated Feature Film" -- it's also one of the contenders for "Best Picture".

It's rare that animation is placed on equal footing with live-action movies. This is only the second time EVER that an animated feature has been nominated for "Best Picture". The first was Disney's Beauty and the Beast back in 1992... which was beaten out by -- of all things -- The Silence of the Lambs.

I doubt that UP will win "Best Picture" (hello, Avatar), but it's nice to see animation getting the props it deserves... Not only is UP an amazingly animated film, both artistically and technically (did you read about how they used mathematical algorithms to animate the cluster of over 10,000 helium balloons?), it's also a wonderful story (seriously, how could you not tear up during that montage about Carl and Ellie?) and lots of fun, too. SQUIRREL!

You can learn more about the making of UP in the book, The Art of UP:

The Art of UP contains more than 250 pieces of concept art developed for the feature including storyboards, full-color pastels, digital and pencil sketches, character studies, color scripts, and more.

The Mad Hatter’s Art Party

by Siobhan
Art & Photography + Events + Film + Kids / March 02, 2010

Tim Burton's much-anticpated Alice in Wonderland movie comes out this Friday. I can't wait to see it; there's something really intriguing about new artistic interpretations inspired by classic children's books.

Crystal has already blogged about Chronicle's new edition of Alice in Wonderland -- which includes the story alongside a collection artwork by many artists who have illustrated the story in the 145 (!!!) years since the book was originally published.

I also wanted to share links to these two art shows that are also on now, featuring Alice-inspired art:

"Two Days Slow" opens March 4th at Canteen Gallery in Ottawa, Ontario.

"Curiouser and Curiouser" opened last week at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, California -- you can see artwork in the show online.

I read about these two shows on the blog Picture Book Report, which is itself a celebration of brilliant, classic children's books, revisiting and renewing them with new artwork:

Picture Book Report is an extended love-song to books. Fifteen illustrators will reach out to their favorite books and create wonderful pieces of art in response to the text that has moved them, shaped them, or excited them.

Celebrating 145 Years of Alice in Wonderland

by Crystal
Art & Photography + Film + Kids / January 19, 2010

Growing up Alice in Wonderland was one of my favourite children's books. It transported me to a far away magical world. I would get lost in the pages for hours charmed by the White Rabbit, beguiled by the Cheshire Cat and tickled pink by Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.

As much as I loved Lewis Carroll's bewitching words I also found myself losing myself in the imaginative illustrations.

Perhaps my love of Alice in Wonderland put me on the path to becoming a Children's Book Publicist.

Imagine my delight when I found out that Chronicle Books is publishing a Classic Illustrated Edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderdland! One hundred and forty-five years since its publication the Chronicle Books edition creates a treasure trove of the countless ways artists have imagined Alice over the decades.

Want a sneak peek? Here is a book trailer that Chronicle Books created for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: A Classic Illustrated Edition.

The book comes out in March just in time for Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland Movie!

Make a necklace inspired by Leonardo da Vinci

by Siobhan
Art & Photography + Craft + Kids / October 09, 2009

imageNeed something for the kids to do while you’re busy cooking turkey this weekend?

Chronicle Books have posted a free craft project on their blog, excerpted from ARTFUL JEWELRY by Jo Packham.

The book offers 11 jewelry projects inspired by famous works of art: earrings that capture the soft Spring colors of Botticelli’s La Primavera, a necklace celebrating the swirly sky of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, and teardrop pearl earrings straight out of Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. The kit even includes materials - beads, embroidery floss, earring posts, and more - to make 6 of the projects straight away.

Visit the Chronicle Books blog to download instructions and print-ready templates to make Bewitching Beaded Necklace, was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine, which he painted around 1490 when “long, ropy strands of pearls, stones, or beads were very much in vogue.”

Andrew Zuckerman Has Fans Of All Ages

by Crystal
Art & Photography + Kids / October 07, 2009

I am a huge fan of Andrew Zuckerman. I think his photography is breathtaking, cutting edge and unlike anything else out there. I have shared the beautiful animal photos in CREATURE ABC with my 13 month old daughter and I can’t wait until she is old enough to play with the CREATURE FLOOR PUZZLES . I had never considered sharing his coffee table books with her. Well Strollerderby did!

Strollerderby (The Mother Of All Parenting Blogs) recently named BIRD by Andrew Zuckerman as their Book Of The Week.

She said:

First I should point out that this ain’t no board book. For that matter, you shouldn’t let your kids grimy hands anywhere near it.  But they can look with just their eyes, just make sure not to let them get their marks on the pristine white pages of this magnificent tome to birds in the aptly named book Bird.

I loved how she described her daughter’s reaction to the book:

My 3 ¾ (FYI - that ¾ is very important) and I looked at each and every page and she was completely entranced by the images of her new feathered friends. She blurted out comments about the birds such as “He’s fancy!”, “His beak looks like a spoon”, “She’s doing ballet class”, and “He’s conducting”. Interesting observations from a child’s perspective. Then she proceeded to act out what the birds were doing in each photo, complete with sound effects. Her Southern Ground Hornbill impression was impassioned and just a little scary.

For the full review please visit the Strollerderby Blog. Strollerderby’s review made me reconsider the materials that I will share with my daughter in the future and I thank her for that. There is a whole world of books that we can share with our children in addition to what is in the children’s department.

One series that my daughter loves (that would go very nicely with BIRD) are the BIRD SONG BOOKS. My daughter loves to push the buttons on the BIRD SONGS WALL CALENDARS and hear the calls that each bird makes. The 2010 BIRD SONG WALL CALENDAR would make a great addition to any toddler’s (or grownup’s) wall.

What grownup books do your little ones love?

Lastly, in case you missed it here are the videos of the making of BIRD.

Yellow Bird Project is a Montreal-based non-profit initiative that was started in 2006. Yellow Bird Project has worked with an amazing range of indie rock musicians (Bon Iver, The Shins, Joseph Arthur, The National to name a few) to create unique t-shirt designs (designed by the musicians) that benefit an array of charities. Each charity is chosen by the musicians as well, so YBP has given money to a variety of charities; St, Jude's Children's Research, AIDS society, Mercy Corp, etc!. The goal of Yellow Bird Project is to do something fun that encourages philanthropy in young people and support the artists we love. For more information about YBP's mission, and to purchase T-shirts crafted by some of the bands in this book, please visit http://www.yellowbirdproject.com.
