May the Best Zombies Win!
by Siobhan
Humour / November 13, 2009
It's Friday the 13th... so it seems appropriate to be writing about blood, gore and zombies.
But wait, who am I kidding? I've been writing about zombies consistently for the last few weeks here on the Raincoast blog. I couldn't help it though, as photos (and even a video!) have been pouring in from booksellers across the country to share their Quirk Classics Monster Mash-Up displays.
We sent all the entries down to our friends at Quirk Books to deliberate which deathly display should be crowned the best in Canada. After much deliberation -- and, in true zombie fashion, with much blood, sweat and tears -- the judges finally came back with the results....
1st prize: University of Alberta Bookstore (Edmonton, Alberta)
Judges' comments: Particularly impressed by the zombie lady and the Col. Brandon.

2nd prize: Millennia Books (Hanover, Ontario)
Judges' comments: Enjoyed the sea monster balloon (very creative).

3rd prize: Kwantlen Polytechnic University Bookstore (Surrey, BC)
Judges' comments: Liked the zombie lady and the smaller touches.

Honorable Mention: Misty River Books (Terrace, BC)
Judges' comments: These ladies dressed up as regency era zombies -- pretty cool.
See photos of their display

In case you are wondering, the judging committee at Quirk Books consisted of...
- Jason Rekulak, Quirk Classics mastermind and a sucker for regency era zombie costumes.
- Doogie Horner, Creator of the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters covers and judging his 5th window display contest of the year.
- Brett Cohen, enjoys his trips to Canada.
Congratulations to all the booksellers who participated:
- Chat Noir Books (New Liskeard, Ontario)
- University of Alberta Bookstore (Edmonton, Alberta)
- Millennia Books (Hanover, Ontario)
- Westminster Books (Fredericton, New Brunswick)
- Book Express Ltd. (Cambridge, Ontario)
- Books on Beechwood (Ottawa, Ontario)
- Misty River Books (Terrace, BC)
- Kwantlen Polytechnic University Bookstore (Surrey, BC)

Book Express in Cambridge, Ontario, just sent in a video of their Quirk Classics window display. Watch it to get a close-up view of all the gorey details… I think the rat is my favourite. He’s wearing a monocle and a top hat! Oh, and he’s munching on an eyeball. Awww. And ewww…

Oh, the horror!
As you may have noticed (unless you’re a zombie), over the past few days, I’ve been posting photos of booksellers across Canada who created some creepy, spooky, and downright gorey scenes in their stores… all in celebration of Quirk Classics books—namely, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES (and the DELUXE HEIRLOOM EDITION) and SENSE AND SENSIBILITY AND SEA MONSTERS.
Here’s a roundup of links to all the awesomeness. I hope these images of literary horror haven’t been keeping you up at night.

Terror in Terrace!
by Siobhan
Humour / November 02, 2009
There’s been a lot of discussion in the publishing world recently about whether the book is dead, what with the advent of e-book, new technologies, and so on.
I think people are missing the point. Instead of debating whether or not the “book is dead”, we should really be asking the question, “Is the bookseller dead?”
If we look at a case study—oh, say, Misty River Books in Terrace, B.C.—the answer to this question would be a resounding “YES!”. Likely followed by a bloodcurdling scream.
Just look at this undead staff. They might try handsell you a book. But they might just gnaw your hand off instead.

You Ought Not Go to Ottawa!

Humour / November 02, 2009
You ought not go to Ottawa… unless you want to be eaten by a giant sea monster!
What? You don’t believe me?? All the evidence is clearly on display in the window of Books on Beechwood. The black beast has taken up residency in the bookstore, along with a rather nasty looking witch.
Still don’t believe me?? Well, look what happened to some other skeptics: their heads were shrunken and placed on a tree full of spider webs. Just sayin’.

Carnage in Cambridge!

Humour / November 02, 2009
News (and photos!) keep pouring in from booksellers across Canada who created creepy Quirk Classics displays for Halloween.
Book Express in Cambridge, Ontario, created a cabinet of curios—full of delecacies (a bowl full of eyeballs and a teacup spilling blood) and delights (a severed arm, a red octopus and… a rat wearing a top hat and monocle!).
Not to mention that angry mob of zombies about to march through the window…

Westminster Books in Fredericton, New Brunswick sent in some photos of their Quirk Classics window display, complete with bloody handprints and spooky green octopus.

As Gloria from Westminster Books says, the staff there are “lovers of great classics and great silliness”. Sounds like my kind of people.

Evil Dead: The Musical extends its Vancouver run
by Danielle
October 23, 2009
I haven’t been able to see this wickedly awesome production (so I’ve heard) but Evil Dead has extended it’s run until November 14th at The Vogue Theatre in Vancouver, BC.

Based on Sam Raimi’s cult trilogy of films, Evil Dead: The Musical tells the age-old tale of a man who ends up battling his friends after accidentally turning them into demons.
So if you like creepy deathly monster type things you’ll get a kick out of these books from Chronicle and Quirk Books. Perfect for any fan of zombies, yucky killer sea creatures, and Jane Austen. The titles really explain it all! Let us know what you think! Comments welcome!
