PPZ Movie To Start Shooting Next Year?

by Dan
Fiction + Humour / August 13, 2010

We were very excited around here when we heard whispers last year from our friends at Quirk Books that Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was going to be made into a movie. So just imagine our delight when they confirmed that the book was optioned by Natalie Portman, who will produce and star in the film adaptation, and that David O. Russell, who directed and wrote Three Kings and the existential comedy I ♥ Huckabees is writing the script and directing!

Last month at the San Diego Comic-Con, Portman updated MTV on where things are at with the movie:

And if literary mash-ups are your thing, don't forget about Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the DreadfulsSense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, and the latest Quirk Classic Android Karenina!

We were no longer “good society” . . .

Fiction + Humour / July 26, 2010

At some point over the weekend this hilarious video for Jane Austen's Fight Club went viral:

Of course, all this ass-whupping Austen action started with Lizzie Bennett kicking seven shades of shih tzu out of the undead in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and its prequel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls, but we're not going to begrudge them that. Well played ladies...

And, if you haven't seen it before, here is the fantastic trailer for PPZ: Dawn of the Dreadfuls:

GalleyCat reviews Android Karenina

by Danielle
Fiction / June 09, 2010

...When I began reading Ben H. Winters' mash-up novel, Android Karenina, my hopes were not high for a quick, light or funny read. Oddly enough, it was all three. Mash-ups are the latest thing in the literary world, mixing classics with new world monsters and demons. It's not really all that new; the music world has been doing it for ages. Mad Magazine used to rewrite the comics--Al Capp writing Brenda Starr, for instance.

Winters, a playwright, librettist, and author of Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, connects all of Tolstoy's dots in the cleverly bizarre world he has created and he transforms a Russian novel into a reasonably demented work of science fiction...
~ Louise Leetch

The Wrath of Con!

by Dan
Fiction + Humour / May 18, 2010

From Quirk Books, the people who brought you Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, and Dawn of the Dreadfuls, comes sci-fi/zombie/comedy/adventure Night of the Living Trekkies!

Following a group of rag-tag Trekkies getting together for the fifth annual GulfCon (billed as the “largest Starfleet Convention in the western Gulf Coast region”), our heroes (armed only with prop phasers) soon find themselves defending their hotel and convention centre against hordes of flesh-eating undead!

The book is packed with hundreds of gags referencing Star Trek, Star Wars, comic books, and fan conventions. According to our friends at Quirk, it reads like the strange lovechild of Galaxy Quest and Dawn of the Dead."

Oh yes.

Night of the Living Trekkies will be available from Raincoast this fall. But in the meantime you can find out more information about the book on Facebook.

(Night of the Living Trekkies is an original work of parody and is not officially sponsored by, affiliated with, or endorsed by the owners of the Star Trek®) brand.)

Peeps and Prejudice and Zombies

by Siobhan
Craft + Food & Drink + Humour / March 30, 2010

Peeps Show 2010 is perhaps not what you think. No scandal here, just good ol' sugar coated fun. But I bet you won't be able to tear your eyes away...

For four years now, the Washington Post has been hosting an annual Peeps Diorama Contest: the classic Easter candy is styled and dressed up in various hilarious scenes. They received more than 1,100 sugar-inspired entries, and the Washington Post is sharing some of their faves online.

This year's entries featured many book-themed diorams: Goodnight Moon, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Where the Wild Things Are, The Book of Bunny Suicides, Madeline....

But of course the one I found brilliant was "Peeps and Prejudice and Zombies" based on the mash-up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!

Based on the best-selling novel by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith, dioramists Dayle Cristinzio of Silver Spring and Kasey Gillette of the District depict a ballroom scene with traditional dancing and zombie mayhem in "Peeps and Prejudice and Zombies." Note the period costumes, original Peep oil painting above the mantle and working chandelier.

Some other awesome Peeps dioramas include scenes of Shaun White at the Olympics, Wii Sports, old school Mario Bros, President Obama walking his dog and Michelle Obama playing skiprope in the Whitehouse garden. View the slideshow of the finalists on WashingtonPost.com

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls press kit prep!

by Danielle
Fiction / March 10, 2010

I thought it might be fun to blog about how I whipped up the press kit for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES: DAWN OF THE DREADFULS. I came up with the idea of using a Katana Sword on the cover because it seems that this is one of Elizabeth's weapons of choice, and quite frankly was racking my brain on what to do. I used watercolor crayons to color the cover and with help from my very nice co-workers 41 kits were made for the media. I took the original and color copied it. Then wrapped the book in red paper, covered it with the katana cover then finished off with a red ribbon. Took a while but here is what came of it!! Phew!! All done, till the next one!

Other books in the Quirk Classic series:

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters

Android Karenina

Press kit to come... (and book to be released June)

And if you are a media contact who for some reason didn't get a a copy, please cotact me and I'll send one off. Please note I just sent these March 10.

Yep there are two more coming your way.

In 2009, readers gobbled up the Globe and Mail's and international best seller PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES faster than zombies eat brains. Yet, in the midst of their ravenous reading, audiences began asking questions: Where did the zombies come from? How did Elizabeth Bennet develop such quality martial-arts skills? Thus, a prequel! PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES: DAWN OF THE DREADFULS, by Steve Hockensmith, is an all-new work of fiction inspired by Jane Austen’s beloved characters that gives readers the answers they’ve been looking for—and more.

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY AND SEA MONSTERS coauthor Ben H. Winters is back with an all-new collaborator, legendary Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, and the result is ANDROID KARENINA (due in stores July)—an enhanced edition of the classic love story, now set in a dystopian world of robots, cyborgs, and interstellar space travel.

I For One Welcome Our Android Overlords

by Dan
Fiction + Humour + News / January 13, 2010

Yes. You had better believe it.

The good folks at Quirk Books have remixed and remastered another literary classic for your reading pleasure!

This time, Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters co-author Ben H. Winters is back with an all-new literary collaborator, legendary Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), and the result is a classic love story set in a dystopian world of robots, cyborgs, and interstellar space travel. Welcome to Android Karenina!

As in the original novel, our story follows two relationships: The tragic adulterous love affair of Anna Karenina and Count Alexei Vronsky, and the more hopeful marriage of Nikolai Levin and Princess Kitty Shcherbatskaya. But this a steampunk-inspired world of robotic butlers, clumsy automatons and rudimentary mechanical devices. And when these copper-plated machines begin to revolt against their human masters, our characters must fight back using state-of-the-art 19th-century technology.

With the same blend of romance, drama and ultraviolence that made the first two Quirk Classics New York Times best sellers, Android Karenina brings this celebrated series into the exciting world of science fiction.

Android Karenina will be published in June 2010.
