Among Others Wins a Nebula Award

by Dan
Fiction + Science Fiction and Fantasy / May 23, 2012

Among Others by Jo Walton

I have gone on about Among Others by Montreal-based author Jo Walton numerous (NUMEROUS!) times here already (OK, twice at least, but I've been banging on about it on Twitter* a lot!). Occasionally I would convince some people of its brilliance. Other times, not... so... much. I was beginning to think it was a book you either loved or hated. But now I feel completely and utterly vindicated because Among Others won the Nebula Award for Best Novel over the weekend! Hooray! Congratulations to Jo and all the other winners. (I will not gloat... I will not gloat...)

*You knew Raincoast is on Twitter, right? We're also on Facebook if that's your thing. And don't forget Tumblr! Oh and Pinterest

Luck of the Irish

by Siobhan
Food & Drink + News / June 07, 2011

The Country Cooking of Ireland does it again! It won best international cookbook of 2011 at the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) Awards during the 33rd IACP Annual Conference in Austin, Texas last week.

Is it luck of the Irish? Sounds more like 'third time's a charm' to me... The book has already won two James Beard awards, and now this makes prestigious award #3! Congratulations to the whole team that brought this gorgeous and delicious book to life.

JK Rowling

J.K. Rowling has become the very first winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize, awarded to authors whose stories can be compared to the work of the Danish fairy tale writer.

Rowling accepted the 500,000 kroner ($95,558 CAD) award at a ceremony in Odense, Denmark, the birthplace of Anderson, saying that she was "humbled and deeply honoured" to receive the prize. "Hans Christian Andersen is a writer I revere, because his work was of that rare order that seems to transcend authorship."

Raincoast Wins Bookseller Award for Service

by Jamie
News / May 31, 2010

The Canadian Booksellers Association held their annual Libris Awards this weekend in Toronto and Raincoast came away a winner! We were picked as the best distributor in Canada as voted by booksellers across the country.

Distribution is the selling, promoting, shipping and customer service aspect of bookselling; skills that really matter in a country as big and diverse as Canada. We have been shortlisted or won this award every year for the last decade, so we must be doing something right!

In accepting the award, our CEO John Sawyer, made the case for why we feel the future of traditional books will be very bright. You will be reading more about this theme on our blog in the weeks to come.

Rorie Bruce, our sales representative for the Prairies won the Libris for Rep of the Year which gave us a double reason to celebrate. Rorie has many years of experience in the book industry and his passion and breadth of book knowledge is one of the reasons that the book culture is thriving in western Canada. Congratulations Rorie.

A full list of the winners can be seen here. Congratulations all.

Founded in 2004, the annual awards recognize the best and brightest in English-language comics and graphic novels published in the previous year.

This year’s top honours included:

BEST BOOK: George Sprott: (1894-1975) by Seth (Drawn + Quarterly)

THE PIGSKIN PETERS AWARD: Hot Potatoe by Marc Bell (Drawn & Quarterly)

BEST EMERGING TALENT: Michael DeForge Lose #1 (Koyama Press)

Speaking on behalf of the jury, Pevere praised the Best Book winner George Sprott as "a portrait of a character, of a country…a country that is no longer with us," adding that:

It is a work about memory, a work about culture, a work about the past and a work about the future.

hot potatoe coverSpeaking for Wright Awards nominating committee, which chooses the annual Pigskin Peters Award, Matt Forsythe described Hot Potatoe as "a collection of seven years of work that is insulting and hilarious and sarcastic and sincere," and continued that it has "influenced a whole wave of comics and artists – myself included."

Congratulations to all the winners!
