Looking for the hippest places to party in style? I'm not surprised that Montreal came in at #2 of the world's top ten party cities in Lonely Planet's 1000 ULTIMATE EXPERIENCES. Belgrade tops the list -- check out the Ottawa Citizen article for the full list. Salut and santé!
Easy-going Montreal is increasingly popular with foreign travellers, who enjoy the joie de vivre of a place with bilingual ambience, good local beer and even cross-country skiing at nearby Mount Royal. Montreal’s irrepressible student population and atmospheric old quarter give the city a light-hearted, Bohemian air. There are Old World cafes, cool jazz clubs, packed discos and late bars to choose from, plus a popular comedy festival each July.
1000 ULTIMATE EXPERIENCES brings together 1000 ideas, places and activities to inspire and entertain, for travelers and lovers of life-lists alike. Start the party!

Google’s Earth and Maps team has launched Favourite Places, a chance to explore the favorite places of local experts from cities around the world.

This month, Google worked with a few travel editors and authors from Lonely Planet to share their favorite places across the globe, including Vancouver Encounter guide author, John Lee. He gives us a personal scoop on Vancouver with a tour on Favourite Places.
Tony Wheeler, one of the co-founders of Lonely Planet, also takes a break from his travels and shares his favorite places around the world with a map and a Google Earth tour. Far out!
Find out where they like to go, and why, from their own perspectives. It’s always nice to have a friendly travel guide to point you in the right direction!

Earth Day Countdown—13 days

Today I soaked the seeds and peat moss and got down to planting my SPROUT YOUR OWN LEAFY WONDERS kit.

It was loads of fun. I was not quite sure how hard to pack the peat moss into the containers, or how lightly to sprinkle the peat over the seeds--I'll have to wait and see how they turn out! Now I'm fretting that they will be left all alone at the Raincoast office over the long weekend. At least the planters are near a bright sunny window.

The book that comes with the kit said that the baby seeds are quiescent--that means that they will essentially stay asleep until the conditions are right for them to wake up. The Sensitive Plant, Polka-dot Plant, and Lamb's Ear seeds all need water and warmth to start growing. I'll be thinking of the wee plants this weekend, but I hope this song does not stay in my head too long. Happy Easter!

Meet Dagmar.
Dagmar is not like other vampires. He's shy, he's afraid of humans, and!he's a vegetarian! But even more than he likes vegetables, Dagmar loves candy. And when he hears about Halloween and all the free candy that humans give out, he knows he has to give trick-or-treating a try, in J.otto Seibold and Siobhan Vivian's new Halloween hit: VUNCE UPON A TIME.
This week, for Raincoast's Halloween countdown, we have a VUNCE UPON A TIME activity kit to get you into the spirit.
I'm still not sure what I'm going to be for Halloween, but a vegetarian vampire wouldn't be too far of a stretch. Click on this cool Q+A with the authors below.

We've got mail! When I looked in my physical mailbox this morning, I thought that I was still half-asleep, dreaming of balmy breezes and a sea-side hukilau...Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor shape of fruit stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds!

Lonely Planet actually sent the coconut as a gift in celebration of the new MAUI and HAWAI'I: THE BIG ISLAND Guides. Neat! The guides are full colour and include loads of itineraries, cultural content, and pulse-quickenig outdoor activities. Whatever did they think at Canadian Customs? Next time I'm in the tropics, I'll think twice about sending a boring old postcard.

Lonely Planet has also published the beautiful coffee-table book, THE EUROPE BOOK: A JOURNEY THROUGH EVERY COUNTRY ON THE CONTINENT.
From remote, icy fjords in Greenland to wild street parties in Amsterdam, THE EUROPE BOOK draws together the charms and the surprises of this magnificent continent.
I'll start watching my mailbox for coffee, cheese, and wine!
