Insanewiches; 101 Ways to Think Outside the Lunchbox
by Danielle
Food & Drink / August 19, 2011
Are you bored with lame ol'sandwiches? Well there's this new book out from St. Martin's Press that will have you excited for lunch again. Filled with fun, quirky and easy to make recipes Insanewiches; 101 Ways to Think Outside the Lunchbox will help you rekindle your love for the luncheon meal that everyone loves to hate. The book came from a wickedly popular blog insanewiches.com. The creator of the site, Adrian Fiorino, was born into food culture and raised on a steady diet of offbeat humor. He draws inspiration from the most unexpected sources: cell phones, puzzles, power drills, and even sports cars.
Some recipes that included are:
-The Rubix Cubewich---the sandwich that started it all
-The Pancake Popwich---an irresistible breakfast on a stick
-The Sumo Sandwich---a heavyweight that’s overstuffed with steak, chicken, salmon, and assorted mushrooms, radish and scallions
-The Pumpkin Cheeseburger and Along Came a Spider---kooky concoctions the kids will love,
-Cosmo Martini Sandwich---made with a cranberry muffin and orange slices, just for the girls.
So take a stroll to your local bookshop and pick up a copy, then go to your grocer and grab some ingredients to construct some of these outrageous concoctions!
Oh and of course ENJOY!!
Anders Nilsen Big Questions
by Dan
Graphica / August 16, 2011

Big Questions is cartoonist Anders Nilsen's newest book. But it is also his oldest, collecting together the mini-comic he first started in 1999 into a single volume.
The mini-comics took 10 years to complete, but as Ander's recently told Comic Book Resources, that was just the beginning a long process to bring them together for the book:
I finished the last issue somewhere around September-October and then after that, there was a good six months that was just editing. I think out of all of those pages, probably ninety percent or more have some changes, even if it was just moving a word balloon over or adding a word there. It turned into this giant editing process. I didn't redraw much. I added a few pages. I added one scene in the body of the book and then extended the material from the last two issues. I think I added ten or so pages to the end of the book. There were some deadlines which I did not quite make. I think the book was originally supposed to come out in May for TCAF, which did not happen. That process was just crazy labor intensive and it wasn't the fun part of coming up with the story and doing the drawings. When I was finally done with that, I was definitely exhausted and just slept for a couple days.

After all that, Big Questions, finally done, is over 600 pages long and a stunningly beautiful book. It is also now available from bookstores and Anders is touring to promote it. You can read a PDF preview at Drawn & Quarterly's website, but here are a couple of the pages from book to whet your appetite:

Happy 20th birthday Laurence King!
by Danielle
Architecture + Art & Photography + Design & Typography + Film + Reference / August 12, 2011
Well Laurence King the publishing house, not Laurence King the founder himself (I think he's older than 20).
Established in London in 1991, Laurence King Publishing is now recognized as one of the world's leading publishers of books on the creative arts.
Their books are acclaimed for their beautiful design and authoritative text as well as the quality and care taken over their production. They publish books in the fields of art, graphic design, architecture and fashion; just to name a few.
Mark Lamster of Design Observer took up the chance to interview Laurence to hear his thoughts about the state and future of design publishing, and what makes a design book (and book proposal) successful.
...Even with this distinguished catalog, few Americans are likely to know much about King or his press, as until recently most of his titles were sold in this country by other publishers, who purchased their rights. I got to know him this way, both as a buyer and a seller, when I was an editor at Princeton Architectural Press. We worked on many books together — some winners, some losers — and it was always a pleasure. King is one of the true gentlemen of design publishing, self-deprecating and charming in the classic British manner... ~ Mark Lamster

Selective Learning and Goodbyes

Board Books + Fiction + Graphica + Humour + Kids + Parenting + Picture Books + Vancouver / August 09, 2011
Sad news everyone — it's my last day at Raincoast (cue crying and wailing of Raincoast staff here) and I'm still having trouble coming to grips with having to leave all this behind. But mostly I'm having trouble leaving...
- My Star Wars themed desk
- Our warehouse full of books
- And getting to flip through all the awesome ARCs and Samples
Oh, and the people — they were great too.
Seeing as how this is my last day, I think it'll be a good idea to take a moment and reflect on all that I've learned here at Raincoast.
(I've also been watching a lot of late night talk shows)
The 10 Most Important Things I’ve Learned at Raincoast Books
#10 - You can put Zombies in anything
#9 - "Baby Rage” is real. And IS frightening.
#8 - Women really DO want to trade husbands for housekeepers
#7 – Taco in a Bag is delicious
#6 – "Moleskine" isn’t the same as “Vole Skin”
#5- Vegetables are the “New Meat”
#4- Hand puppets and books DO go hand-in-hand
#3- There’s no such thing as “too much Darcy.”
#2- It takes 1 determined intern, 2 weeks and 3 americanos a day to input sales data for 800 titles into an e-catalogue.
#1 Googling The Naked Roommate at work does not produce the best results.
*I had a great time and learned a lot this past year. Thanks for reading about all the quirky things that happen at Raincoast Books through the eyes of a 20-something and I hope you continue to read about all the awesome people here and their love for books.
Cheers,
Brian
Hark! A Vagrant
by Dan
Graphica / August 08, 2011

One of the books I'm most excited about this fall is Hark! A Vagrant by Canadian cartoonist Kate Beaton. The book collects comics from Kate's Hark! A Vagrant website, adds new commentary and some new strips. I honestly, CANNOT WAIT!
Hark! A Vagrant takes a irreverent, absurdist romp through literature, history and comics making fun of such luminaries as Nikola Tesla, the Bronte sisters, Napoleon, Nancy Drew, and Batman. It is therefore, awesome.
If you haven't read Hark! A Vagrant, stop whatever you're doing and go read it right now. Go directly! Do not pass Go!

Fans already familiar with Kate's work, however, might want to check out her recent interview with comics website Newsarama:
I like to explore a topic, and it’s random every time – it’s waking up and going “I want to make a comic out of this.” It’s what I’ve been reading, it’s what I’m interested in, I’m always making little notes and doodling things. A strip might be based on one panel, one image that comes to mind, and building a strip around it.
Right now, I’m reading Jane Eyre, so maybe I’ll make some strips on that for the book, and maybe the website too.
And, for readers with creative leanings themselves, Kate also talked about the business of being a cartoonist on Rena Tom's blog recently. Her advice for newbies? Get an accountant:
I waited WAY too long. Way. Too. Long. Also, if you are in the position where you are working freelance, don’t be afraid to find other freelance buddies to talk to about hourly rates, billing and other potentially frustrating aspects of running a business. Sharing is caring.

Hark! A Vagrant is published in September and Kate will promoting the book in both Toronto and Vancouver this fall. Details to come, I promise!
You can pre-order the book from your local indie, Chapters-Indigo, or Amazon, now.
